WHAT TO EXPECT:
Emergency Department Lab Draw
KEY TO QUALITY (KTQ):
The best emergency departments will draw blood in triage but most wait until you are in your room.

The phlebotomist will knock before entering, introduce themselves and their certification, cleanse their hands with gel or at the sink. They will explain the procedure and how much time it will require.
They will check your name band and ask you to verify your date of birth. This is a key step for safety.
YOUR ROLE:
Don’t let them proceed with the draw until your name and birthdate have been verified with your name band.
After your draw, they will thank you and ask you to verify the tube labels to your identity.
Most tests are completed within an hour of the draw. You should be informed of the results in less than 90 minutes.
